The Spoke

Rising from a gentle ridge among native gambrel oak, The Spoke serves as both destination and beacon for a new master-planned community in Castle Rock. We designed this 6,000-square-foot amenity center to create a social heartbeat within the development—a place where residents connect, exercise, and gather. By reinterpreting rural vernacular through a contemporary lens, the building pays homage to the site's agricultural past while looking confidently toward its future. The structure emerges organically from the landscape, balancing prominence and restraint in equal measure.

Drawing inspiration from the site's agricultural heritage, we selected materials that reference historic barn structures while introducing a contemporary sensibility. Weathered metal panels and warm wood elements create a dialogue between past and present, while large expanses of glass dissolve boundaries between inside and out. This palette allows the building to shift in character throughout the day—solid and grounded in morning light, then increasingly transparent and luminous as evening approaches.

The program organizes around a central social hub with secondary spaces radiating outward, allowing for simultaneous activities without interference. Work areas, exercise spaces, and locker rooms maintain visual connections to the landscape while offering appropriate levels of privacy. The building's positioning maximizes views from interior spaces while creating protected outdoor areas that extend the amenity experience into the landscape. This planning approach ensures the building functions as both destination and gateway.

Designed to be multi-functional, the space can respond to the evolving needs of the community. The enclosed interior space still has access to the large outdoor covered patio, but also smaller patios of its own overlooking the pool and expansive views to the west. This space features a kitchen and lounge space designed for community interaction. The flexible furnishings can transition from casual eating to more organized events, or even coworking. Residents can connect or focus as needed throughout the day.

The pool design recognizes diverse user needs by incorporating distinct adult and family zones while maintaining a cohesive aquatic experience. With dedicated lap swimming areas alongside family-friendly spaces, this aquatic environment serves as a refreshing community focal point that encourages both recreation and exercise.

Simplicity at Every Turn

Embracing an inclusive ethos, Hurley Place positions itself with the river as its focal point, inviting diverse communities and fostering economic vibrancy. The Riverfront development is comprised of two residential towers, a hotel tower, and an expansive central open space connecting to the river. This central connector is flanked by food & beverage and retail establishments and serves as both a connection to the Promenade but also a gathering space for the community.
