Devil’s Thumb Residence
Fraser, Colorado
Nestled into the pines outside of Fraser, Colorado, this modern residence is fully integrated into its surroundings with its use of regional materials of stone and wood, and the regional vernacular of humble cabins and outbuildings. Grays and blacks are offset by the warmth of golden cedar, white ash, and buff granite. Expansive windows take advantage of the dramatic views of the valley to the north and nearby mountain ranges. The design inspiration evolved from the concept of a family cabin that had grown over the years through a series of additions aligned along an east-west axis that graciously responds to the views and contours of the site. Bedrooms and private spaces book-end and frame an open-plan living, kitchen, and dining area where the owners can warm up by the stone fireplace and be immersed in the stunning scenery of the changing seasons of the valley and mountains just outside.
